DIY shower and toilet construction

Well, we all need one, some prefer to use facilities at caravan parks etc, we prefer to have our own. With only a 4 metre long motorhome to build it in, we did not want to sacrifice comfort and wanted room to shower in comfort.

We have fitted a Thetford cassette flushing toilet and a full shower and wash basin. You can even sit on the dunny seat while you shower, thus avoiding the need for a shower stool.

Unfortunately, most of the ready-made fibreglass cubicles did not suit our design or need, so we elected to frame our own using my favourite material – steel!

To keep the weight down a little we settled on 25mm RHS section for the outer-frame, and used light 19mm angle for the rest. The angle provided a surface to affix the laminated lining sheets against, and beside the RHS posts we stitched some 19mm flat steel.

A marble like laminated panel was used for the lining, and on the kitchen side where the hotwater system etc was to be located, we used a sheet of fibro or Hardie panel first, with the laminate bonded to that. The sheets were then fastened to the steel framework with construction adhesive, and propped into position for 24 hours to set.

After the sheeting had set, we progressed on to fabricating a sturdy door, that in the open position could be used to provide extra privacy for the main bedroom area for changing etc. Further on as the build is more complete you will see how the bathroom and the ward-robe doors interlock to provide a privacy screen.
